G+ partners with ABEEólica to further support safe operations in offshore wind

09/02/2024

With a growing international remit, G+, the global offshore wind health and safety organisation, has today announced a new partnership with ABEEólica.

Founded in 2002, ABEEólica (Associação Brasileira de Energia Eólica e Novas tecnologias) is the Brazilian trade association for wind energy, representing the sector right across the industry supply chain.

Through the signing of a cooperation agreement, G+ and ABEEólica will partner in the development of a health and safety framework for the region, through shared access to global knowledge, industry guidance and lessons learned.

Rachel Porto, Global Head of WHSES at Corio Generation and one of the G+ Board Directors said:

“G+ has a wealth of experience supporting the global offshore wind sector. It provides a vital forum for industry players to learn from each other and implement standardized good practice guidelines. G+ means we can share our knowledge and experience to safely manage offshore wind projects, while also helping to influence the adoption of strong health and safety standards in new markets.

“With offshore wind capacity booming in Brazil, we’re excited to be partnering with ABEEólica to support a just energy transition in as safe a way as possible.”

Commenting on the partnership, Elbia Gannoum CEO from ABEEólica said:

"ABEEólica has been working in the wind industry for 20 years and is very interested in sharing information and learning from lessons in other countries regarding offshore wind safety. We are eagerly awaiting the start of offshore wind activities in Brazil and aim to begin with responsibility, transparency, safety, and insights from global experiences, which will be of great value. The potential for offshore wind in Brazil is enormous, and we want to explore it with the utmost care for the health and safety of all involved in these projects. That's why the partnership with G+ is crucial for us."

With plans to partner on joint activities going forward, Matheus Eurico Soares de Noronha, ABEEólica’s Technical Director, will be presenting at the G+ Americas Stakeholder webinar on Friday 16 February.

With expanding operations and funding in the Asia Pacific, North American and South American regions, G+ is continuing to utilise the lessons learned from high potential incidents that occurred during the early stages of offshore wind in Europe to develop good practice guidelines, in multiple languages, to support safe offshore wind operations in these regions.

The G+ Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation comprises twelve leading operators – bp, Corio Generation, EDF Renewables, Equinor, Iberdrola, Ocean Winds, Ørsted, RWE, Siemens Gamesa, SSE Renewables, TotalEnergies and Vattenfall – as well as an expanding array of international associate members.

Setup in partnership with the Energy Institute, G+ works globally to tackle health and safety issues in the industry through four main work programmes: incident data reporting, good practice guidelines, safe by design and learning from incidents.

As part of the drive to ensure lessons learned from these incidents are made freely available, G+ is continuing to make safety incident lessons available through Toolbox, the Energy Institute’s free-to-use incident lessons platform.

G+ will be holding their annual Stakeholder Day on Thursday 7 March in Paris, which provides an important forum for discussions regarding health and safety in the offshore wind industry. To reflect the global nature of the offshore wind industry, it will be preceded by two regional webinars focussing on the Americas and APAC respectively.
