This 2 day classroom course covers the fundamental science, concepts, business case, regulations, and best practices required to develop and deliver an appropriate net zero strategy including calculating emissions and setting carbon reduction targets.
Gareth Veal CEng MEI PhD MSc
Gareth has 20 years of experience developing and delivering energy, climate and net zero strategies. He has worked with multinationals such as Sainsbury’s, Shell, Airbus, BAE systems; SMEs for example in the hospitality and manufacturing sectors; public sector organisations such as the NHS and local authorities; and third sector organisations such as Business Improvement Districts and community led groups energy and climate groups.
Gareth has acted as a trainer for the Energy Institute since 2016, both developing and delivering courses. He also developed and helps track and deliver the Energy Institute’s Net Zero strategy and associated Science Based Targets.
Gareth is a member of the Energy Institutes' Energy Management Panel. He has a PhD on the design and implementation of carbon markets and has published on the topic, as well as acted as a visiting fellow at the University of Bath. Gareth is an ESOS lead Assessor and a Chartered Energy Manager. Most recently, Gareth has become a Certified Passivhaus consultant, working on Passivhaus projects in the NHS, for multi residential blocks, and on Passivhaus Schools.
Gareth is committed to the delivery of net zero and is well placed to tackle it as a strategist, engineer and experienced energy manager.
Chris Burgess CEng MEI BSc
Chris is a Chartered Engineer with a degree in Mechanical & Production Engineering. He has over 35 years' experience within the energy industry and more than 20 years as an independent energy consultant specialising in implementing energy management and technical solutions to reduce cost and greenhouse gas emissions. He carried out energy audits and strategic reviews for a range of public and private sector organisations, using experience to identify and implement energy efficiency measures based on both capital investment and staff engagement solutions.
Chris is qualified as ESOS Lead Assessor, an accredited Assessor for the Carbon Trust Standard and accredited as Climate Registry Lead Verifier (ISO 14064) for greenhouse gas verification in the US following verification of GHG inventories at Stanford University Linear Accelerator, California and Utah Transit Authority, Utah.
Chris has worked with the Energy Institute as a consultant for several years and is now energy management trainer and technical adviser within the Energy Institute Training Team. He designs and delivers bespoke energy and carbon management courses and workshops for a diverse range of UK, Middle East and Hong Kong organisations. These Energy Institute qualification backed courses always include an effective mix of tutor led training, group discussion and delegate activities. Chris also tutors the Energy Institute Level 1, 2 and 3 online and classroom energy management qualifications.
James Brittain CEng MEI MEng MSc
James is also Co-Founder of Energy Conscious Organisation (EnCO), Consultant Editor for Croneri Energy Management, Lead trainer and tutor for the Energy Institute's energy management training qualifications at Level 1 (Essentials), Level 2 (Professional), Level 3 (Advanced) and a regular contributor to conferences and Head Judge for international awards.
James has successfully helped deliver millions of pounds of benefits for organisations. He is a Chartered Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in energy and sustainability improvements for many organisations, ranging from commercial companies to hospitals, and roles from Energy Manager for a large airport to the Sustainability Director for a tourism business. He understands that biggest savings come about through combining technical and people solutions.
