EI Standard 1541 Requirements for internal protective coating systems used in aviation fuel handling systems

Overview:

EI 1541 provides performance requirements for protective coating systems that may be used in aviation fuel handling systems (e.g. storage tanks, rail tank cars, road tankers, hydrant pipes, filter vessels and piping).

The provisions of this standard are intended for new aviation fuel handling systems or existing systems that are undergoing coating repair or replacement.

• Clarification that conformance with EI 1541 requires certification/qualification to DEF STAN 80-097 or MIL-PRF-23236 in the first instance, and then conformance with all of the requirements of EI 1541.
• Clarifying that for a solvent-free coating, certification to DEF STAN 80-097 or MIL-PRF-23236D does not have to include testing for pot life or specular gloss.
• Aligning the definition of a coating system (for those available in different dry film thicknesses) with that included in MIL-PRF-23236.
• Clarifying that if a manufacturer tests the thickest coating in the greatest number of coats (the worst-case condition in terms of potential impact of the coating on fuel quality), an application of fewer coats is covered by that qualification without the need for any further testing.

Coating system qualifications to EI 1541 second edition are recognised as also meeting the requirements of this third edition: requalification testing is not necessary.
